We carefully crafted the classes in our Sustainable Ag program to provide a solid, science base; to build on the UK CORE (general education program), to teach the principles of sustainability and to prepare students for their targeted careers. The Sustainable Ag CORE includes four classes – starting at the introductory level (SAG 101), reaching out broadly into culture (SAG 201), providing hands on experience (SAG 397) and ending with a integrative capstone class (SAG 490).

Because the SAG program is science-based, and in preparation for upper division classes, students take economics, biology, chemistry and nutrition classes early in their programs. These classes, along with the UK CORE (general education requirements), lead to classes in the three pillars of sustainability – environmental stewardship; economic profitability; and, social responsibility. The program requirements are listed in the SAG Curriculum.

Students have two options in the SAG program – a “farming” option and a “community food systems” option. These packages of courses prepare students for their specific career paths. Within these two choices, there is enough room in the 120 credit hour program for students to specialize in an area of their specific interest by taking courses from our  “specialty support” lists – Farming option specialty support or Community Food Systems option specialty support. The flexibility of the program allows you to focus on an area of your interest. This may be a broad variety of classes, or, like some of our students, you may want to get a minor in animal sciences, horticulture or agronomy (for those in the farming option); or a students in the community food systems option could take classes in nutrition, sociology and economics as an example for that option.
